The Planning, Design and Construction Office has an opening for a dedicated, resourceful, and enthusiastic Senior Campus Planner to join a vibrant, newly integrated, and growing team that is responsible for all planning, design, and construction at Harvard Medical School. Under the supervision of the Director for Campus Planning, the incumbent will manage and control all aspects of comprehensive programming and analysis, strategic planning and feasibility studies with an emphasis on capital planning and preconstruction project planning for the school. The Senior Campus Planner identifies and works with end users, school leadership, external consultants, and other members of Campus Planning and Facilities staff to establish project goals and objectives, and plan for the highest and best use of intended facilities that align with the school?s mission.
Responsibilities include:
Manages complex feasibility, planning and analysis studies for the short and long-term development of the school, including existing use, campus growth, and multi-year capital plan integration.
Determines and recommends initiatives in areas of focus and contracts with all necessary firms and specialty consultants required for successful completion of project.
Leads strategic project planning and establishes program, scopes of work, preliminary layouts, schedules and target budgets.
Responsible for timely execution of HMS?s project delivery process.
Solicit and oversees the selection process and management of A/E firms, consultants and contractors in a manner that delivers high quality, fiscally responsible solutions that inform planning and future design and construction project phases.
Leads project teams, including end user and stakeholder groups, leadership, and HMS department representatives to develop program.
Communicates to senior leadership issues affecting delivery of proposed project plans to address risk and maximize opportunities for a successful project.
Constantly evaluates program, alternative design and strategies, and construction solutions to deliver the best and highest use of school?s physical and financial resources.
Mediates solutions for issues and facilitates consensus building amongst stakeholder groups with varying priorities and viewpoints.
Identifies budgeting resources for funding approvals, including projections for future projects and their potential gains and losses.
Garners project and funding approvals and effectively transitions approved projects to project management staff.
Ensures program, goals, and objectives defined in planning are implemented in design and construction phases.
Contributes to the development, implementation and management of campus standards and plans for the continuous improvement of the school?s physical resources and operations.
Work in a cross functional capacity with the project management team, facilities, environmental health and safety, campus services, and others.
Anticipates all school and agency approvals necessary to successful execution of a project. This includes local, state, University, and other approvals applicable to the specific project.
Completes invoicing and budget reconciliation upon feasibility completion, resolves all outstanding invoices and analyzes project costs for use in future project planning/budget development.
Represents Planning, Design and Construction interests as required and leads committee(s) as assigned.
Oversees planner staff on projects with overlapping resources.
Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Planning or relevant field required.
Minimum of 8+ years of experience in related area.

Experience in basic science research programming and/or design highly preferred.
License, certification or master?s degree preferred.
Proven ability to manage and resolve issues, under a variety of circumstances and urgency, with insight, diplomacy, and sensitivity, as well as coordinate and direct a multi-disciplined team which includes managers and peers independently and effectively.
Familiarity with City, State, and Federal codes and ordinances.
Knowledge with lab building construction and renovations in both new and aged facilities requiring coordination of utility and or structural impacts to occupied research facilities.
Familiarity with architectural, engineering, design, and construction best practices.
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain project budgets and schedules, as well as plan and manage projects to achieve deadlines and objectives.
Knowledge of and ability to identify project risks.
Familiarity with A/V, MEP, HVAC, FA/FP, lighting, and control systems.
