We are looking for an audiovisual consultant and designer who has strong experience in performance audio systems and mixing audio for live performance. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary design team working with owners, architects, and project managers to deliver high-quality audiovisual systems for performing arts and higher education projects. You will work with the owner to determine the system requirements, coordinate with the design team to ensure systems are integrated with the architecture and other trades, document the design in the form of drawings and specifications, and commission the systems once your design has been installed.
You are someone who is comfortable designing and providing on-site calibration/tuning of performance sound systems. While experience with video and control systems is a plus, the eagerness to learn these areas of design is the only prerequisite. As an expert in technology, you are comfortable with and enjoy learning new software and equipment. The right person will enjoy working with others in a team environment, have a passion for technology and the performing arts, and show compassion and empathy when explaining technical concepts to non-technical people.
This position could be fully remote for the right candidate, but preference will be given to qualified candidates located in New York, Chicago, Denver, or Los Angeles. The level of seniority we're looking for in this position is Consultant (4-7 years AV design experience), but we will consider candidates with more experience for a Senior Consultant-level job. The salary range presented here is for the Consultant level.
Position responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the client and/or project managers to determine audiovisual systems performance and functionality requirements. Document those requirements as a scope of work to guide the design process.
- Estimate project budgets for audiovisual equipment and labor. Update these estimates as the project progresses.
- Oversee the design and product selection on your projects for the following systems:
- Loudspeakers, amplifiers, signal processing, and mixing

- Utilize Revit and AutoCAD software to create bid drawings showing floor plans, sections, single-line diagrams, and other drawing details required to create a complete design package.
- Utilize sound system design software (EASE, MAPP XT, Soundvision, etc.) to determine appropriate loudspeaker selection, placement, and configuration based on the program and architecture of the space.
- Prepare system specifications and equipment lists as part of a complete design package.
- Coordinate with other trades (both internal and external) on the project to ensure a fully coordinated design.
- Review and respond to construction submittals and requests for information (RFIs) from the audiovisual contractor procuring and installing your design.
- Commission audiovisual systems, once installed, to confirm system meets the performance and functionality requirements specified for the design.
- Provide audio system tuning to calibrate the loudspeaker system once it has been installed.
- Use and maintain methods and tools outlined by Theatre Projects standards and practices guidelines
- Work with team members to develop new standards and best practices
- Participate in team meetings, cross-departmental duties as assigned, and collaboration sessions
- Travel to the project site for meetings and system commissioning, as needed.
Essential skills and experience:
