The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) is the largest division of Harvard University and is comprised of 150 departments including Harvard College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Division of Continuing Education, libraries, museums, and athletics. As of Fall 2019, FAS was composed of 1,221 total faculty, 6,716 undergraduate students, 4.600 graduate students, 13,643 continuing education students, 2,600 administrative staff, offering approximately 1,200 undergraduate courses per semester held in 480 learning spaces.
Education Support Services (ESS), formerly Instructional Media Services, in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences provides world-class audiovisual and instructional support, training and consulting services to faculty, staff, students. The team supports the school's mission by delivering premium technology offerings that enhance and creatively advance the teaching & learning environment.
The Technical Director, Design and Engineering, ESS will be responsible for installation, maintenance, refresh and upgrades of all AV technology equipment in ESS supported FAS learning spaces, to ensure smooth operations and uninterrupted teaching and learning during courses. The Technical Director will work with Harvard University IT (HUIT) and the Office of Physical Resources and Planning (OPRP) to plan the design, engineering, and maintenance of AV infrastructure, technology and equipment supporting teaching and learning in said spaces. They will work closely with the Deputy Director of ESS to ensure that the AV technology meets the pedagogical needs of the FAS.
In addition, they will lead the implementation of the FAS learning space upgrade roadmap, in collaboration with FAS and University stakeholders as well as external vendors. They will manage up to 10 direct reports, ensuring their certification and training in related fields. They will represent ESS on FAS, University and Ivy Plus AV committees as needed.
The Technical Director, Design and Engineering will:
Ensure smooth operations of classroom technology in all registrar scheduled learning spaces in the FAS. This includes installed audiovisual technology in classrooms, portable AV equipment used for lecture capture and videography at ESS supported events, as well as rental equipment and inventory.
Manage as well as provide leadership and development of up to 10 direct reports, including both full-time and temporary resources (Year-Up and interns from local schools). Enable staff to develop the skills and appropriate certification for AV design and engineering.
Develop and implement a multi-year plan in collaboration with HUIT and FAS stakeholders for how FAS can invest in existing learning spaces to improve technology through staged and sustainable investments. Additionally, develop an annual budget for maintaining and upgrading current technology. This includes asset tracking and inventory management.
Set AV technology standards for the FAS and ensure adherence to those standards. Manage vendor projects to ensure that they meet project and FAS standards and deliverables.
Actively participate in IT, and OPRP related learning space and AV infrastructure upgrade projects to ensure alignment with the needs of the customers, end users and IT Support Services; ensure all services are adequately documented for the same constituencies
Oversee all AV vendor relationships for space upgrade projects. Develop a strong understanding of the vendors who work in this field. Collaborate as needed and understand the technology that is being implemented.
Develop a plan to insource design and planning for FAS AV technology upgrades to reduce dependency and spend on external AV vendors.
Make strategic AV design and technology decisions by staying up-to-date on evolving AV technology applications in pedagogical settings and by testing/ piloting new and emerging equipment to enhance FAS teaching and learning models in various fields.

Bachelor's degree in engineering or audiovisual technical field, or combination of technical education, training, and experience
Seven or more years of managing a portfolio of AV technology in teaching and learning spaces
Experience managing technical AV staff
Advanced knowledge of AV manufacturers, vendors and systems and applications in pedagogical field
Demonstrated experience with AV project and vendor management
Experience designing and integrating AV systems and equipment into learning spaces
Experience designing and implementing AV over IP solutions
Recent experience leveraging evolving AV technology to accommodate virtual and hybrid teaching models in learning spaces
Experience developing and managing budgets and service contracts
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
Strong customer service orientation
Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users
Media control and monitoring systems, (e.g. Crestron), codecs, switchers, and audio DSPs
Video conferencing systems (e.g. Zoom)
Automated video streaming and capture (Panopto preferred)
Multi-channel wired and wireless sound systems, assisted listening systems, acoustical standards; specialized equipment for classroom use
Broad knowledge of wire terminations, troubleshooting and pretesting; signal flow; network protocols and technologies
Learning space design experience preferred
Experience with AVOIP applications in pedagogical settings
Ability to read and comprehend AV system drawings, specifications, technical manuals as well as (wall elevations, RCP's, room layouts, system schematics, etc.)
Experience building high performing and diverse teams preferred
Previous experience managing in a union environment
