The primary function of the Video Systems Engineer is to oversee and supervise the implementation, maintenance, and effective use and support of all recording, streaming, and on-demand video hardware and software for Harvard Medical School's Teaching and Learning mission. This position will work closely with academic departments, content producers, and other IT units to ensure video systems align to institutional needs, and will provide technical oversight of and is responsible for their continued operation through performing regular and documented software and hardware maintenance. Responsible for ensuring systems are utilized to their maximum potential, s/he will work with other technicians and support staff across the Teaching and Learning, Client Services, and Infrastructure IT teams to cross-train and provide subject matter expertise to community training events and end-user documentation.
Reporting to the Director for Teaching and Learning Technologies, the Video Systems Engineer supports both educational and other general audio-visual activities in the Tosteson Medical Education Center and other teaching and amphitheater spaces around the school. S/he will provide guidance and expertise in effective operation of the HMS Learning Studios, amphitheaters, control rooms, and dependent systems to capture and deliver educational video content. A successful incumbent will research and advise on recommended workflows or technical options to improve quality, operational efficiencies and the end-user experience, and help inform long-term strategy, related to our service offerings. Deep application-level expertise with software used to provide technical services is essential, assuming a thorough knowledge of relevant technical specifications as well as a complete understanding of application features and functionality. The position must remain current with emerging technologies that will benefit the audio/visual mission of the department.
Because many educational activities and events take place outside of normal business hours including weekends, this position will require a flexible work schedule.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and execute on technical systems strategy in support of recording, live streaming, and on-demand video systems
Support and maintain control room video switching and recording equipment
Manage DVR, NRDVR, and DVCS Encoding servers and devices for complex multi-camera recording environment
Configure and optimize encoding / transcoding systems for quality online video delivery to varied connected markets
Manage cloud and on-premises video platforms' set-up, onboarding, continued cleanup, and deprovisioning, including course setup, player / recording profiles, codec/bitrate settings, and content organizational best-practices
Develop, perform and document continued quality control exercises on related systems and outputs
Design and maintain professional video editing workstations and network attached storage
Cross-train AV Technicians and other IT staff on effective utilization and operation of video technologies
Train students, faculty, staff, and hospital affiliates in the use of user-facing video technologies.
Triage support tickets daily using workflow management system (ServiceNow).

5+ years experience operating control room, recording, streaming, and on-demand video systems, preferably in an educational setting
Bachelors Degree in audiovisual technology or computer science related field, or equivalent experience in audio/visual systems technology
Proven experience designing, implementing, and maintaining complex video and control room systems, preferably in a higher-ed setting
Confidence in defining optimal codec and bitrate settings for varied connected markets.
Experience designing workflows and user account structures in cloud-based video solutions.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to share information effectively and confidently to internal and external audiences of varying levels of technical knowledge.
Proven business/systems analysis, documentation, and project planning and management experience.
Excellent time management, organization, and planning skills.
Requires working knowledge of advanced video production techniques for live and on-demand distribution.
Familiarity with service management software (ServiceNow or similar) and proficiency in implementing and evaluating reporting for continual quality improvement, evaluating trends in service delivery and user satisfaction.
Proficiency creating multimedia content and other learning modules using authoring tools desirable.
