The Stevenson Union (SU) is the community center for the university. The SU provides meeting space, services and programs that enhance the university's educational, cultural, and social life. The SU is open an average of 15 hours a day, six days a week and has an annual operating budget of over one million dollars. This position exists to complete the custodial responsibilities of the SU and Britt Ballroom and to provide support to other Student Activities Department operations. The custodian cleans a building either alone or in conjunction with other custodians and/or students and may perform a variety of tasks or only certain designated tasks depending on the assignment. Custodial tasks include cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, trashing, dusting, window cleaning, carpet and floor cleaning and maintenance, and other periodic duties associated with maintaining the overall appearance and sanitation of the SU and Britt Ballroom buildings. This position also includes the tasks of coordinating set-ups including audio-visual and computer equipment, cleaning during the morning, afternoon, and occasional weekend days. The custodian is responsible for assigning work, overseeing, and inspecting the work of the student custodial staff.
Minimum Classification Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification. The appointing authority is responsible for recruitment and selection. Refer to Personnel Rule 105-43-005.
One year custodial experience preferred, specifically within a public or school setting. Prefer experience with maintenance and repairs, carpet and hard floor cleaning equipment such as extractors, scrubbers, and buffers, as well as the knowledge of proper procedures for carpet and hard floor maintenance. Some knowledge of audio-visual and computer equipment.
All Listed Duties:
Daily work may include one or more of the following: 1. Cleans meeting rooms and arranges desks and chairs, cleans boards 2. Cleans offices 3. Dust mops / wet mops hallways and floors 4. Cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms 5. Cleans stairwells (inside and out) 6. Vacuums / dustmops floors. 7. Cleans windows 8. Trash and recycle inside and outside building 9. Maintains carpets by extracting, shampooing, etc. 10. Maintains hard floors by scrubbing, buffing, stripping, waxing. 11. Assigns work for student worker(s) and monitors performance. Cleans around perimeter of the building(s): Cleans walks. Sweeps entrances and porches. Snow removal
Maintenance and Repairs: 1. Changes lights 2. Orders supplies 3. Helps with moves and setups 4. Reports needed repairs for maintenance and safety problems. 5. Clears clogged drains. 6. Performs minor maintenance of custodial equipment and building
Helps maintain equipment
Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Event & Meeting Set-Up Sets up furniture, audio visual and computer equipment for events. Responds to last minute requests or changes from constituents.
Security 1. Locks and unlocks building and meeting rooms 2. Turns on and off lights 3. Makes rounds to ensure systems are functioning properly 4. Reports security deficiencies
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
