Grinnell College is currently seeking a skilled, well-organized, and motivated Digital Media Equipment Manager to support the new Film and Media Studies program.
The Digital Media Equipment Manager (DMEM) will be responsible for managing all of the program’s digital media facilities. This includes purchasing and maintaining production equipment, computer hardware and software, supervising student employees, and facilitating faculty and student production in the Film and Media Studies (FMS) program. This position reports to a production-based Film and Media Studies faculty member, and works in collaboration with Studio Art, Information Technology Services, Audio Visual Services and Facilities Management. Evening and weekend hours may be required.
The DMEM’s essential responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Administering daily operations of the FMS Mac computer lab and production studio. This will include researching, recommending, purchasing, configuring, installing, upgrading and maintaining all equipment for use in courses, and keeping an up-to-date log of technical issues and solutions.
Providing technical support and training to students and faculty in a wide variety of media technologies and basic production techniques necessary to accomplish academic and research-related projects. This may involve delivering workshops, providing individual project-based support, and creating training materials.
Checking out equipment to faculty and students. This includes maintaining a checkout system and tracking inventory of digital media assets.
Hiring and supervising student workers.
Maintaining the FMS budget.
Performing other job related duties and special projects as assigned.
Associate’s and 3 -4 years experience or Bachelor’s degree in digital film and/or media production or related field with coursework and skills in HD/UHD technology and digital video/audio production and post-production along with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
Demonstrated technical experience using digital media production equipment, (HD/UHD cameras, microphones, recording devices) post-production workspace computers, digital video/audio editing software and multimedia software.
Demonstrated technical experience with installation and maintenance of computer hardware, software, networks, servers, and data storage.
Basic electrical skills for lighting (circuit breakers, power distribution).
Capacity to organize, prioritize, and schedule equipment allocation and establish and maintain clear equipment allocation procedures.
Ability to keep accurate records including equipment tracking, inventory of assets, and technical log of issues and resolution methods.
Working knowledge of and demonstrated ability to instruct students and faculty with widely varying levels of expertise in the following: video camera operation, audio recording, lighting, and basic film production crew roles.
Proficiency and ability to instruct students and faculty in the following software: Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, Media Encoder, After Effects, Photoshop, Speedgrade, Audition, Prelude), PluralEyes, ProTools, Microsoft Office, QuickTime, and other software used in digital video/audio post-production.
Working knowledge of best practices for media management, file organization, video compression, and codecs.
Knowledge of current media technologies and trends with a proactive commitment to staying abreast of advances in the field and ability to learn new technologies, applications and equipment quickly.
