General Purpose Under general supervision, oversees activities of an art laboratory/studio during open hours; assists instructors in preparing materials and demonstrations for classroom and skills laboratory use, setting up equipment, providing supplies and implementing instructional programs; responds to student questions regarding procedures and requirements; explains and demonstrates the use of cameras, tools and equipment; maintains and replenishes an inventory of materials and supplies; follows procedures for the short-term loan of equipment and tools to students; ensures a clean, safe and orderly laboratory and learning environment; and performs related duties as assigned. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Oversees activities in one or more assigned arts laboratories/studios during open hours; responds to student questions regarding laboratory procedures and requirements; maintains an inventory of materials and supplies for instructor and student use; ensures labs are open and ready for use during scheduled hours and that equipment is in sound working order; monitors to ensure lab closing procedures are followed; ensures a clean, safe and orderly learning environment.
Prepares for, sets up and dismantles equipment for instructor in-classroom demonstrations; assists with demonstrations of proper techniques and use of tools and equipment; plans the layout of equipment subject to instructor approval; sets up and tethers cameras, computers, lighting kits, microphones, camera cranes and other equipment needed for demonstrations; calibrates, maintains and performs minor repairs on cameras and other equipment.
Demonstrates and trains students on operations and uses of laboratory/studio equipment; responds to student questions regarding methods and techniques; assists students in adapting personal cameras and other equipment to replicate techniques and processes used in demonstrations; provides clear and concise explanations and demonstrations to facilitate student understanding and reinforce instructor teaching; answers questions on camera diagnostics, Adobe Photoshop and other specialized software and computer color calibration issues and scanner drive setup; observes students during laboratory periods, advises students on proper use and techniques and provides feedback to students and the instructor.
Oversees activities in art laboratory/studio involving ceramics, art welding, paper making, woodworking, jewelry making and other art specialties; formulates and mixes glazes, clays and paper pulps; lights up/turns off gas and electrical kilns; loads and unloads kilns; monitors students in the laboratory to ensure safety procedures are followed; maintains and demonstrates the safe usage of kilns, application of glazes, clay mixing, papermaking, woodworking, bronze casting and a variety of other equipment and associated tools; conducts safety inspections and prepares required safety reports.
Oversees and organizes an arts tool room; uses barcoding software to print barcode labels to affix to cameras and other equipment; checks out cameras and other equipment for student use on projects in accordance with established loan criteria and monitors to ensure their timely return.
Stocks and replenishes an inventory of materials and consumables; tracks supplies usage; prepares purchase requisitions to ensure sufficient materials for classroom and laboratory use; inspects mechanical cameras and other equipment and makes minor repairs to maintain items in sound working order; arranges for major repair or replacement of tools and equipment; performs nozzle checks on printers.
Maintains a photography darkroom; stores and mixes chemicals for darkroom use; arranges for the safe storage and disposal of darkroom chemicals, glazes and a variety of other hazardous materials.
Inspects and maintains laboratory safety equipment such as eye wash station and safety kits; conducts safety inspections and prepares required safety reports; assists in enforcing safety and security procedures in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Monitors student attendance in the lab, enters data in systems such as SARS and runs reports for distribution and review.
Participates in selecting, training and providing day-to-day lead work direction to student assistants performing laboratory housekeeping and other functions; assigns and monitors work for complete-ness, accuracy and conformance with District, department and legal/regulatory requirements and standards; provides information, instruction and training on work procedures and technical, legal, regulatory and safety requirements; assists in ensuring a fair, open and inclusive work environment in accordance with the District's mission, goals and values.
Prepares and submits requests for technology and facility repair and maintenance issues to the Information Technology department or Building Services department.
Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participates in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the District.
Provides a variety of support for student art shows and other special events including: setting up camera, audio-visual and sound system equipment; collecting digital image files of entries and resizing and printing or setting up screen views for judging; installing art work; and filming, editing and creating video presentations for events.
May proctor student examinations.
Design and print posters for the department; collect and deposit student fees for field trips.
Organize and maintain a variety of records and files.
Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE An associate degree or completion of a certificate program in an arts area relevant to area of assignment, and at least two years of progressively responsible experience in the relevant arts field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program. A current, valid forklift operator certification may be required in certain assignments.
