Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division has an opening for a Computer Systems Engineer. You will serve as a system administrator and IT engineer on Berkeley Lab's Computing Sciences IT Team. This 3-4 person team provides dedicated IT support for approximately 300 users, 120 Linux servers & workstations, and 230 Mac laptops & desktops in the Lab's Computing Sciences Directorate. You will provide workstation (Mac, Linux, some Windows) and A/V and videoconferencing support for staff in Berkeley Lab's Computing Sciences Area. Maintain and support laptops, desktops, mobile devices, servers, storage, networks, backups, security, and associated infrastructure systems. Activities include, but are not limited to: troubleshooting technical problems, fielding support requests, working with users to understand IT-related needs and develop solutions, building and configuring systems & software, recommending hardware for specific computing tasks, maintaining backups, scripting/automating routine tasks, and implementing best practices in cybersecurity. Working closely with team members to develop and implement group standards for system configuration and workflow process.
This position will be filled at level 1 or 2, dependent on experience.
What You Will Do:
Support user workstations, including software/hardware troubleshooting, OS configuration and initial setup.
A/V and Technical support for meetings, including video conferences that take place in Computing Sciences conference rooms.
Manage the team's pool of loaner computers, prepare and deliver new and loaner computers to staff and affiliates
Maintain and purchase replacements for the team's local stock of IT-related parts and accessories, and propose changes as new technologies emerge.
Work with property management staff to change ownership of users' devices and retire/salvage old equipment.
Assist in the overall work and mission to provide technical support, consultation, and expertise to CS users, their projects, and their software and hardware resources.
Collaborate with the team in maintaining and supporting hardware & software for the various systems and services, including Linux & Mac workstation support, account management, LDAP, Kerberos, WWW, printers, data storage, networking, code repository, backups, OS installation & update, video conferencing, and web servers.
Develop solutions to technical problems associated with the systems and services we support.
Produce documentation for technical solutions, processes, and procedures to ensure consistency and share information with team members.
Seek ways to make operations more efficient and effective, via automation, smart sourcing, and design choices.
Write documentation, and collaborate with team members via email, IM, trouble ticket system, video chat, and in-person.
Work with vendors and other groups/divisions to find the best support for problems outside the team's core focus (e.g., institutional services, such as email, central authentication, wiki, collaboration services, web hosting, virtual machines) as appropriate.
Assist with managing servers and user-facing services.
Remain abreast of current, relevant technologies related to the areas described above.
What Is Required:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, and a minimum of two years of experience working in a similar role.
Must have a strong technical aptitude and possess a substantial breadth of knowledge & expertise, with significant depth in Linux/macOS system administration and technical troubleshooting.
Demonstrated ability to develop effective solutions to moderately complex problems, (e.g., troubleshooting authentication and network performance issues, efficiently managing configurations for multiple Linux systems)and take initiative to lead planning and execution of technical tasks and projects.
Able to work effectively while balancing multiple priorities/tasks.
Command and fluency with several of these: Linux (build, configure, troubleshoot), macOS, iOS, Windows (marginal), TCP/IP, CUPS, SSH, SMTP, IMAP, printers, video conferencing software & hardware, backup system concepts (experience with HPSS a plus).
Ability to effectively deal with people in a wide variety of situations, including proposing technical solutions to peers, handling frustrated customers, convincing people to consider different approaches/solutions.
Strong written and oral communications skills, (e.g., soliciting and synthesizing technical requirements, explaining complex concepts to people with various levels of technical backgrounds, documenting technical solutions, and sharing knowledge with team members).
Demonstrated experience collaborating with team members using various methods including email, IM, trouble ticket system, video chat, and in-person.
Must be able to lift 20-40 lbs, work with basic hand tools, use a ladder.

Demonstrated ability to develop effective solutions to problems of diverse scope, (e.g., troubleshooting authentication and network performance issues, efficiently managing configurations for multiple Linux systems) and independently take initiative to lead planning and execution of technical tasks and projects.
Experience and knowledge with LDAP, NFS, apache, VM concepts, shell scripting, postgres, Perl, Python, Awk, Sed, source code management (e.g. SVN, CVS, GIT).
Ability to work with minimal supervision on large and complex tasks.
Ability to lead, plan and manage group projects.
Occasional work in a loud, cool computer room, at a workbench and among computer racks.
Work may also include working on laptop and desktop machines at the workbench areas of the room.
Training in the location and use of fire protection equipment including fire extinguishers is required.
Tools used typically include hand tools such as screwdrivers and occasionally may include utility knives or other hand tools.
Equipment used includes ladders, step stools, lift tables, pallet jacks, and wheeled carts.
In some limited locations, sound levels from operating computing equipment reach the level that would require hearing protection if a worker was present in the area for 8 hours. Hearing protection is recommended (and provided) in these areas for workers who are there for more than brief times.

This is a full time, 2 years term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
