This position is part of a team responsible for the design and implementation of communications for Student Affairs’ initiatives that serve the entire UC Berkeley campus. This team works collaboratively with central campus offices (Public Affairs, University Relations), respective functional owners called “clients” from a variety of departments (Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Dean of Students, Residential and Student Service Programs including house and dining and hospitality), and partner offices (academic units, Administration and Finance) to successfully launch and sustain Student Affairs communications initiatives.
OVERVIEW: Working for the Student Affairs Communications department, the Marketing Specialist 3 position is the graphic design lead responsible for initiating, providing, and maintaining the workflow and production of design services such as posters, static and digital displays, fliers, website graphics, directional signage, brochures, advertisements, and other marketing and promotional materials for the various programs and departments throughout the Student Affairs portfolio. The position will use skills as a seasoned, experienced design professional to contribute to a full range of marketing and communications activities, including developing and implementing promotional materials and products designed to promote awareness within the campus community and to the general public of department and/or campus services, programs or products. This position will refer to creative briefs, campaigns and plans and confer with marketing communications managers, writer/editors, other communications design specialists, web programming specialists, project directors and related staff in the preparation of proposed communications materials; verify that format of copy conforms to printing and/or electronic publishing specifications, and may art direct a photographer as needed.
•Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Communications, designs and coordinates the design of promotional materials and products designed to promote awareness of the department and/or campus services, programs or products within the campus community or to the general public. Designs, develops, and creates marketing/public relations and promotional materials, using primarily Macintosh computer systems (with appropriate software.) Applications include (but are not limited to) multi-page layouts, four-color brochures, mailers, table tents, large and small format posters, calendars, advertisements, flyers, banners, logos, signs, graphics for digital platforms, promotional displays, digital signage and presentation materials, and specialty projects that may involve clothing or exhibit. •Researches, analyzes, monitors and evaluates marketing efforts for effectiveness, reporting results to appropriate higher levels of administration Researches project assignments, applies professional concepts to plan, schedule, design and coordinate graphic designs that meet the needs of the creative brief, plan, or campaign developed for the client in partnership with the client relationship manager. •Coordinates and schedules vendor services in the preparation of final products, including opening POs for design projects. Performs press checks and approves final copy before the commencement of production runs. •Coordinates design, production and distribution of publications and other promotional materials, including internet or web materials, advertisements, catalogs, brochures, flyers, signage, A/V presentations, displays, exhibits, et cetera. Coordinates appropriate use of campus and/or department logos, emblems, et cetera. Develops and coordinates with outside campus sponsors the development of sponsor logos and securing approval for all logo related content prior to events. •Establishes and maintains contacts with internal and external marketing professionals and vendors; e.g. artists, designers, photographers, mailing houses, postal service, list brokers, advertising representatives, et cetera. •Provides high-level guidance on design and publishing technology, services for web design, or expertise on production processes for final products. •Uses “client service” skills to accommodate changing dates, priorities, and styles. Works in collaboration with the client relationship manager, who will serve as the primary point of client contact, to ensure client needs and goals are met.•Must have at least 8 years senior design experience •Demonstrated professional experience in industry standards of the graphic design field with extensive knowledge of the principles of print, typeface, color, layout, and production techniques. •Demonstrated professional experience with the design, layout, and implementation of final artwork into a visual product, including ability to conceptualize and storyboard ideas. •Demonstrated professional experience working with peripheral devices such as scanners, printers, and digital cameras. •Demonstrated professional experience in creating computer illustrations, presentations and video output. •Demonstrated extensive experience and proficiency with graphic design software, including Adobe Creative Suite. •Thorough knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques. •Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate one to one and in small groups. Demonstrated experience to facilitating open and effective communication, cooperation, and teamwork within and outside of one’s own team. •Strong skills in interpersonal communications to interact effectively with a variety of clients, support staff and vendors. •Demonstrated extensive experience and proficiency in industry standards of design, content management software, web publishing, and related web-based programs. •Demonstrated exceptional oral and written communication skills, including accurate English usage and exceptional proofreading and editing skills. •Must possess good time/project management skills for working in and meeting deadlines in varied and hectic environments. Demonstrated ability to coordinate, and establish project production schedules in partnership with the client relationship manager, work both with the team and independently and coordinate many different tasks, determining the importance of each, setting deadlines and completing projects accordingly. •Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of research and to develop ideas for the design, layout, and preparation of printed materials. •Knowledge of marketing principles, concepts, techniques and applications relevant to the field of promotion and advertising. •Thorough knowledge of the campus, including its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives and infrastructure. •Thorough knowledge of the campus' products and services. •Strong skills in originating and maintaining databases for desktop publishing and image storage. •Strong skills to effectively produce marketing communications materials that meet and satisfy the needs of the client. •Strong skills in collaboration to best meet goals and objectives of clients. •Ability to handle multiple small to large multiple projects simultaneously. •Select and manage print vendors to pre-flight electronic files for printing. Review all instructions and schedules with print vendors. Keep clients, key colleagues, and/or SA Comms leadership informed of any and all adjustments to delivery and costs. •Strong interpersonal communication and political acumen skills. •Skill in mentoring less experienced staff. •Bachelors degree in graphic design or related field and/or equivalent experience/training. •Online portfolio of work
